Judiciary Committee votes to abolish death penalty

The House Judiciary Committee voted Monday to approve a bill that seeks to abolish the death penalty in Colorado. Money currently used for death penalty cases would instead fund the cold case unit of the Colorado Bureau of Investigation. Supporters of the legislation claim the move would save taxpayers money while also bringing justice to more victims of violent crimes.

"State Reps. Steve King, R-Grand Junction, and Laura Bradford, R-Collbran, disagreed today when she asked the House Transportation and Energy Committee to kill one of her bills.

King lamented that he was concerned it took Bradford’s use of a bill to force the governor’s office and Public Utilities Commission to sit down and consider a future for the Cameo power plant.

“I think it’s unfortunate that you basically had to waste a bill title to get the PUC, Xcel and the governor’s office to address this issue,” King said."

King makes changes to school evacuation bill

"The mandate in Rep. Steve King’s bill that the School Safety Resource Center work with schools to develop safety drills was removed from the bill before it was pulled over the table to be considered another day, effectively eliminating the issues described below.

The amendment from Rep. Tom Massey, R-Poncha Springs — approved in an 8-5 vote — accomplished this by removing section No. 6 from the bill. As a result, the need for the hiring of a security consultant disappears."

"Freudian Slip" reignites conversation about Rep. King and taxes

"For the second time in two legislative sessions, a Republican lawmaker has effectively accused state Rep. Steve King, R-Grand Junction, of trying to raise taxes.

During a hearing today on King’s automotive fee increase proposal, House Bill 1036, Rep. Spencer Swalm, R-Centennial, zeroed in on one of King’s common sayings, which he uttered it in reference to his bill.

Swalm highlighted King’s comment that his automotive fee hike would offer Coloradans “a value for their tax dollar.”

“You made a Freudian slip,” Swalm said."
