Owens shows a little sympathy for Churchill

"In a deposition, former Governor Bill Owens says he was glad the University of Colorado didn’t immediately fire professor Ward Churchill, as Owens (pictured) had urged, in the wake of a controversial essay about the 9/11 terrorist attacks that triggered national outrage when it came to the media’s attention in 2005.

That’s according to the Rocky Mountain News, which reports that Owens feels that had Churchill been fired, Churchill’s free-speech rights would have been violated."

The deposition took place in the office of Churchill's attorney, David Lane. Owens, who left office in January 2007 and now is a businessman, was represented by the attorney general's office."

But McInnis recently made waves on the political scene when he claimed he could have beaten Democrat Mark Udall in Colorado's 2008 U.S. Senate race, where Udall prevailed over GOP contender Bob Schaffer.

Bill Owens has come out to actively support a candidate, telling reporters in a conference call this morning that he thinks Republican Presidential nominee Sen. John McCain can win Colorado, and that he plans to take an active role in this year's presidential race.
