7/3: Boulder food nannies
How about a cupcake for dessert? Not in Boulder!
More on that in a moment on the Face The State Radio Minute.
Chalk this one up to "only in Boulder." A group of parents and educators are pushing the Boulder Valley School District to adopt a "wellness policy" aimed at "eliminating unhealthy food from the school experience." The plan contains 19 strategies for keeping kids fit: a nanny's dream! Not only does the policy outline ways to keep sugary snacks out of kids' hands, but also tells parents what kind of lunches they're encouraged to pack for their kids.
The goal of the district's "School Food Project" is noble, but nutrition starts at home. The document also makes a "public policy" pronouncement to "work cooperatively with School Boards throughout the state and the nation to advance goals of wellness." Okay.
