A Hispanic special-interest group says there aren’t enough minorities in public office. But why should race matter at all in elections?
More on that in a moment on the Face The State Radio Minute.
On Face The State’s weekend radio program, immigration attorney Amber Tafoya told me she of her displeasure in not seeing more minorities considered for recent high-profile political appointments. She would have liked to have seen former Denver elections commissioner Rosemary Rodriguez as Colorado’s new Secretary of State, for instance.
The logic goes like this: a minority appointee would be better equipped to identify with Latinos, and reinforce the idea anyone can rise to political prominence. That sounds nice, but it implies group identity is somehow central to political decision-making.
Skin color isn’t something we choose for ourselves. But political ideology is. Good politicians can identify with all their diverse constituents, not just those who look alike.
