10/3: Hurry up and register

Originally aired October 3, 2008

Are you registered? To vote? Many people aren’t, and Monday’s the deadline for this year’s election.

More on that in a moment on the Face The State Radio Minute.

It’s crazy to think many of us will be receiving ballots in the mail as soon as next week for November’s election. No matter where you come down on the political spectrum, one thing is certain: Your voice can’t be heard if you’re not registered to vote.

According to the US Census Bureau, only 67 percent of Americans 18 or older were registered to vote as of 2006. And can you believe it, only half of those eligible actually cast a ballot.

If you’re not registered - for whatever reason – you’ve got until Monday to sign up. At this point, you’ll need to go to your County Clerk’s office and sign up in person. But that’s a small price to pay to participate in the world’s greatest representative democracy.

And hey, if you don’t vote, you don’t get the privilege in participating in another great American tradition: complaining about the lousy politicians in charge.
