Will a four-day work week make government more efficient, or just give state workers an extra day to ski in the winter?
More on that in a moment on the Face The State Radio Minute.
Alright, what do you think about this one? Rep. Don Marostica has proposed a four-day work week for state employees. He says the plan could save millions – although no official estimates are available yet. The Republican from Loveland points to a similar schedule set to begin next month in Utah, estimated to save $3 million annually. But that’s out of a total budget of over $11 billion – that’s with a “B.”
In exchange for the new day off, state workers would clock an extra two hours a day, so they’re still working a full schedule. State troopers, corrections officers and other critical workers wouldn’t change their shifts. But will the savings be worth shuttering offices for a whole day?
I look forward to vigorous debate on the idea when lawmakers gather next year. It’s a creative solution to a complex problem of high gas prices, and it’s worth a serious look.
