Did the legislature really pass a bill that makes it legal for a man to walk into a woman’s bathroom? Or are some people just successful in painting a new law in a bad light?
More on that in a moment on the Face The State Radio Minute.
A little bit of history, first: The state protects certain classes of people, based on national origin, gender, race, and the like, from discrimination in “public accommodation,” something usually construed to mean apartment rentals, government benefit programs, you get the idea.
This year, lawmakers passed and Governor Bill Ritter signed a bill to extend those protections based on sexual orientation, as well. Some social conservatives argue that now means anyone of any gender may use any public bathroom.
Is it true? I’m not convinced that’s really going to happen, but until a court takes up a test case of a man arrested for being in the women’s loo, for instance, we’ll have to wait and see. But it’s not an unreasonable guess, and politicians should answer the frank questions some are asking about the intended purpose of the law.
