First Fort Collins, now Denver: Unions are chomping at the bit to set up shop in city government.
More on that in a moment on the Face The State Radio Minute.
The Teamsters union (*Local 17) in Denver has turned in over 1,000 signatures from city employees seeking to institute collective bargaining there. The problem is, city council lacks any authority to do anything about it.
Well, I should say that’s a problem for the unions, not for citizens. As Face The State recently reported, voters in Fort Collins overwhelmingly rejected a proposal to grant collective bargaining rights to unions, for fear the arrangement would lead to higher taxes.
Labor bosses read the rules differently and say it’s not necessary to ask voters what they think. Let’s do the math here – roughly a thousand city workers want the right to strong-arm the city no matter the will of the people – all 588,000 of them.
The Teamsters say if they don’t get their way, they’ll fight to unseat city councilmen who disagree with their plan. Heaven forbid we just let the voters decide.
