5/8: Goodbye to Lakewood's grocery tax

As strange as it sounds, one Colorado city is doing what many thought could never be done – they’re ditching a sales tax.

More on that in a moment on the Face The State Radio Minute.

Could it be true? Could the unthinkable be happening? A city is getting rid of a sales tax? Yep, you heard it right – and it’s happening in Lakewood, right now.

Based on pressure from a citizen coalition, the city is considering eliminating its 2 percent sales tax on food. The result: A potential decrease of $4 million to the city’s coffers. City leaders are balking at the price tag, but $3 million will be made up by rescinding a sales tax waiver from the city’s largest shopping center. That’s a fair move, and still results in a modest decrease in taxes, overall.

The whole exercise is a testament to the power of citizens to exert pressure on their government. The founding fathers would be proud.
