Say goodbye to the Taxpayer’s Bill of Rights if House Speaker Andrew Romanoff has his way with the Constitution.
More on that in a moment on the Face The State Radio Minute.
Republican Attorney General John Suthers has teamed up with House Speaker Andrew Romanoff, D-Denver, to remove key taxpayer protections from the state Constitution.
Suthers says the conflict between TABOR and Amendment 23, which requires large increases in state education spending, is “untenable.”
The plan would ask voters for a change to the Constitution removing both TABOR and Amendment 23, but 23 would live on in state statute. TABOR’s best features get thrown out.
Romanoff has made clear for months his intention to "clean up" the Constitution. But there’s nothing “clean” about getting rid of an important taxpayer protection.
Amendment 23 is set to sunset in a year, anyway. Romanoff’s plan isn’t about school funding, it’s about sticking it to the taxpayers.
