Musgrave unveils new ad: a gentler, kinder Marilyn?

Republican Congresswoman Marilyn Musgrave released her first TV commercial Wednesday, a spot strong on the embattled Representative’s character and light on specific issues and opponent-bashing.

Much in the same vein as John McCain's focus on his history as a prisoner of war as a character-building qualification for holding office, Musgrave's ad tells the story of her troubled and poverty-ridden childhood and how it prepared her to serve constituents during hard times.

In a press release sent out accompanying the ad, the Musgrave campaign states that in the last six years the congresswoman has been subject to over $10 million in attack ads. In 2006, an opposition group called Coloradans for Plain Talk launched commercials showing a Musgrave look-a-like dressed in a pink suit and stealing from a solider in a coffin.

Musgrave’s opponent, Betsy Markey, a former aide to Democrat Sen. Ken Salazar, released her first official television spot late last month.
