Anarchists Grow Up

April 4, 2008

Ultra-liberal groups organizing under the banner “Re-create ‘68” are preparing to stage mass protests during the Democratic National Convention this August. But at a strategy meeting Thursday night at the Gypsy House Cafe on Capitol Hill, the group appeared polite, organized, and well, just plain pleasant.

The goal of this liberal fringe group is made clear by its name. Its members want to replicate the loud, violent protests that took place outside the 1968 DNC in Chicago. But violence or chaos was far from the focus of Thursday's meeting - where the dozen or so people who attended talked not about anarchy - but instead of unity, hoping to organize "everyone from Obama supporters to anarchists."

The group's leaders believe that they can draw 50,000 people to Denver's streets in August to "resist a two-party system that allows imperialism and racism to continue unrestrained."

According to R68's Web site, the group meets at the cafe at 13th and Marion every Thursday. More power to them. During this year's waning days of summer, we look forward to seeing Democrats attempting to prevent Denver from being overwhelmed by R68's protesters. And with Republicans heading to Minneapolis for their own convention the next week, they may just want to send a big thank you to R68's polite, organized, and pleasant anarchist planners.
