During a media availability Friday, House Minority Leader Mike May, R-Parker, answered questions about everything from the ethics investigation that delayed his resignation to the state's projected $604 million budget shortfall, and even offered his recommendation for U.S. Sen. Ken Salazar's replacement.
May said term-limited House Speaker Andrew Romanoff, D-Denver, was his pick for the U.S. Senate now vacated by Ken Salazar and added that he is fine with Romanoff serving the next two years of Salazar's term because he's confident a Republican will win the seat in 2010. Salazar was appointed earlier this week to serve as President-elect Barack Obama's Interior secretary.
Romanoff was passed over the for Colorado's secretary of state Friday morning when Gov. Bill Ritter appointed outgoing Rep. Bernie Buescher, R-Grand Junction, with insiders telling Face The State that Romanoff will be selected to serve in a regional position for the Obama administration. As of now, however, Romanoff's name is still being circulated as a contender for Salazar's seat, along with Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper and U.S. Rep. Ed Perlmutter.
It's hard to say if May's endorsement will help Romanoff, but it can't hurt, right? One thing is certain, though, Ritter appreciates the input.
