Colorado's budget gap and the Ref C legacy

December 31, 2008

"Higher education funding may take a major hit as Colorado lawmakers face a state budget gap that could be $600 million, reports Tim Hoover.

The economic downturn and updated tax revenue forecasts prompted Democratic Gov. Bill Ritter to revise his own estimate of the shortfall - and to ask state agencies for further budget cuts.

Could any of this have been avoided?

DeGette: "Hickenlooper's as liberal as I am"

December 19, 2008

"U.S. Rep. Diana DeGette, D-Denver, who is seeking the two-year appointment to the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by U.S. Senator Ken Salazar, said Thursday it was "ridiculous" that a woman hadn't yet served in that role or as governor of Colorado and doubted that "the press, or the chattering class, seriously consider any of the women candidates."

"Three candidates have emerged for the House District 44 seat that Minority Leader Mike May has announced he will vacate in January.

Douglas County GOP operative Chris Holbert said he's won May's endorsement, among other Republican leaders. A consultant for trade organizations, Holbert ran campaigns for state Sen. Ted Harvey and state Senator-elect Mark Scheffel and had planned to run in 2010 when May would have faced term limits.

Ciruli says the Dems are on a trial basis

December 4, 2008

"Colorado Springs -- Colorado Democrats intent on redecorating the halls of power after sweeping election victories this November had better be careful about hanging too many pictures on the wall, local pollster-pundit extraordinaire Floyd Ciruli told a crowd of county commissioners Wednesday.

They don’t own the place yet.

“It’s a lease,” Ciruli told the commissioners at the last day of Colorado Counties Inc.’s winter meetings. “People are saying, ‘Go ahead, we’ll give you a year or two.’ And then they might pull the franchise if it doesn't work out.” "

CATO gives Ritter a "D"

November 28, 2008

"Bill "Recession" Ritter, as disgusted House Republicans now call Colorado's chief executive, managed only a D in the Cato Institute's fiscal policy report card on the nation's governors for 2008.

Chris Edwards of Cato said Ritter's spending record was above average, but his grade was pulled down by two recent attempted tax hikes, the school property tax case now before the state Supreme Court and the energy severance proposal defeated by voters this month."

Ritter promises quick decision on Salazar seat

December 17, 2008

"In a statement released this morning, Gov. Bill Ritter promised a quick pick to replace outgoing U.S. Sen. Ken Salazar, though he did not set a specific timeline.

"In the coming days, I will work thoughtfully, deliberately and quickly to identify a successor," Gov. Ritter said. "With the economy in crisis and many other important issues facing the next Congress and the new Obama administration, Colorado must have the best talent at the U.S. Capitol." "

Who paid for the convention anyway?

December 10, 2008

"There's snow on the ground here in Denver. Last summer's Democratic convention here and the GOP convention in Minneapolis/St. Paul seem like distant, balmy memories. Unfortunately, disclosure of donors to the convention committees comes only long after the fact.

Ritter's visit with Obama looks a little suspicious

December 1, 2008

"People of Colorado, your employee Gov. Bill Ritter wants you to know that his trip this week to Philadelphia and Washington, D.C., to meet with President-elect Barack Obama and his transition team is absolutely, positively, most definitely not for a job interview.

Don’t read too much into the meetings, in which topics of discussion will include transportation and, a Ritter favorite, energy.

Don’t look suspiciously at the timing, during a period in which Obama is busy announcing his cabinet appointments.

This isn’t what it looks like, says Ritter’s spokesman."

Ritter plans to stay put in Colorado

November 28, 2008

"Speculation about a potential move to Washington aside, Gov. Bill Ritter sounds as if he's staying put in Colorado - and contemplating a run for re-election in 2010.

Following a press conference today about his recent trade mission to Asia, Ritter answered a couple questions about his own future. Regarding a potential cabinet post in the Obama administration, Ritter demurred, but did say that "the next Secretary of Energy has to be somebody that has Barack Obama’s vision for creating a different energy future and really meshing our climate policy with our energy policy."
