Gardner takes a swing at Cheney

January 5, 2009

"Taking shots at Vice President Dick Cheney might seem more like a page out of a liberal strategy book, but state Rep. Cory Gardner, R-Yuma, did just that in a statement sent out to the press today.

Here’s what Gardner said: “In the re-districting decision, the Court actually defined itself as a legislating body, reminiscent of Vice President Dick Cheney’s assertion that the Executive role of the Vice President is also part of the Legislative.

Wage controls past and present

January 5, 2009

"The Denver Post's William Porter thinks it's "good news" that Colorado's minimum wage is going up in this time of economic trouble. But the effect of wage controls is to throw some people out of work, in this case some of those with the least experience trying to gain a foothold in the job market.

This past Wednesday I lamented the automatic increase in Colorado's minimum wage. Yesterday I discussed some aspects of wage controls during the Great Depression. Here I discuss more of the background of wage controls as reviewed by Burton Folsom in his book, New Deal or Raw Deal?"

Ritter will run in 2010

January 4, 2009

"Today’s Denver Post provides the news that one of my New Year’s Day predictions was wrong. Bill Ritter will run for reelection in 2010.

Who could have guessed?

The article has some interesting quotes:

"On the average voter level, [ Bill ] Ritter is not in all that bad a shape," [ Floyd ] Ciruli said. "I think his problem is with the 'attentive public,' and that includes his own party."

Bennet for Senate...has a nice ring

January 2, 2009

"RMR posits a variety of plausible theories on the nature of the Bennet appointment by Gov. "Blue Ribbon" Bill Ritter. The reaction from both sides is complete bafflement--both GOP State Chair Dick Wadhams and the folks at ColoradoPols are in the WTF? boat. Other reactions include everything from Bennet as "dark horse superstar" to the harbinger of a new age of political aristocracy in America.

The only constant: that the appointment is risky, especially given the failure rate of appointees to be elected on their own in subsequent elections."

Pension freezes at the Post

January 5, 2009

"In mid-December, news broke that MediaNews Group head Dean Singleton asked unions to open negotiations on new contracts early in the hope of saving a combined $20 million at the Denver Post and the Denver Newspaper Agency. But, as mentioned parenthetically in a December 16 More Messages blog, this information wasn't reported by the Post. Since then, things have changed on that score, albeit in unexpectedly subtle ways. Bennet should start preparing for his Senate race

January 5, 2009

"That's right, ladies and gentlemen... it's time for a highly-targeted Colorado Senate race! (It's been a full ten weeks since the last one ended, and you're probably already missing the campaign, right?)

Governor Ritter's choice to replace Ken Salazar is already ramping up his campaign.

He needs to. He's never run before."

What will be the fallout in DPS from Bennet's appointment?

January 5, 2009

"Today we start back by wondering what the fallout will be from the big appointment of Denver Public Schools superintendent Michael Bennet to fill a vacancy in the United States Senate. From the standpoint of the Senate and federal education reform policy, there’s no doubt this selection represents a net improvement. The optimism of Democrats for Education Reform is justified. Where Bennet stands on many other important issues of the day, however, is not known.

Virtus supports Lundberg for SD 15

January 3, 2009

"Kevin Lundberg is one of the hardest-working and most responsible (and responsive) lawmakers in Denver, not to mention a competent and articulate spokesman for conservative principles. Lundberg regularly has some of the highest ratings from the fiscal watchdogs at the Colorado Union of Taxpayers. To see beyond his voting record, check out his website or listen to his recent appearance on Rocky Mountain Alliance Blog Talk Radio.

January 2, 2009

"Responding to cries that his proposed legislation could create work for his own security firm, state Rep. Steve King, R-Grand Junction, has advised his critics that no conflicts of interest exist.

Here are excerpts from his upcoming letter to the editor..."
