Despite declining polls numbers, Republican presidential candidate John McCain drew nearly a thousand supporters to a town hall meeting targeting women at the downtown Denver Sheraton hotel Thursday.

Lisa Schomp, a third generation family business owner, introduced McCain to a cheering crowd. "John McCain and [his running mate] Sarah Palin have, the word I like to use, 'moxie'," she said.

In his remarks, McCain focused on the economy, job creation and affordable health care. “Women are the fastest growing number of small business owners in America, and we need to keep their taxes low,” McCain said.

The crowd booed when McCain attacked his opponent Democrat Barack Obama for voting to raise taxes an alleged 94 times. And they cheered when he plugged his running mate, Palin, who debated fellow vice-presidential nominee Joe Biden later Thursday.

"Sarah has a clear record, a clear record of reform," he said of Palin.

While McCain denounced universal health care, he did elaborate on his proposal to bring a $5,000 tax credit to help families struggling to buy health insurance.

Multiple women in the audience thanked McCain for his service and shared personal stories. McCain said this was one of his most memorable campaign stops.

“This was great and informative,” said Lori Brown, legislative assistant to the state Senate Republicans. “It should help make swing voters’ choice easier.”

McCain is slated to appear in Pueblo this morning.
